The Art of Heart: Part 1

To understand the heart we have to begin with getting to know who I am. The being that I am. The being within.

Today we are very much focused on the visible and the things of the invisible have been given less attention. As a result, whilst we are technologically advanced and comfortably debate ideas we find ourselves feeling empty, lonely or ‘missing something’. We find sorrow and distress are on the increase globally. Technology alone, whilst a valuable tool, hasn’t been enough to bring us to where we say we want to be. We have lost contact with our hearts.

Why? Maybe I offered a helping hand only to find myself in a whole heap of trouble or rejected. So it seemed safer to stay within my shell, only the consequence is that I now feel isolated and lonely. Then maybe it was that I trusted and found myself betrayed. So not wanting to make myself vulnerable again I barricade myself within, only in doing I have deprived myself of the true warmth of exchange that can be between human beings.

In effect it is as if we are only half alive. We know of the two sides of the brain and how the left side deals with things of reason and logic and the right side with creativity, spirituality and the things beyond reason or logic. We have given the left side a lot of attention but at the price of creating an imbalance. Amalgamating both sides is the art of heart or living with heart. We need both reason and heart. Reason lets me navigate from A to B. Heart is about the manner I travel in. As I travel from A to B what is going on within me? What do I sense, feel and experience? Dullness? Boredom? Beauty? Fortune?

Re-balancing: strengthening the right-side
Go within, be silent and allow yourself to get back in touch with your core.
1, check what is going on in your mind; see your thoughts scattering in all directions. Then take charge, elevate and move them in the direction of where you want to be.
2, see what is going on with your feelings. We need to sort them out and reconnect with our heart.

No time? Firstly, recognise the value of re-balancing for you and tell yourself all the benefits (a happier and more contended you). It is only when we see the value of something or want something that we make time for it. Recognise the need to live as a whole being and not half a being, then make becoming whole your top priority. Value yourself enough to make this important.

Not wanting to look? Sometimes we are ‘put off’ looking inside as when we do we find the feelings we encounter aren’t pleasant. Don’t run, know that these feelings are just the waves on the surface of the ocean. You are the ocean itself, go to the depth of the ocean bed. Don’t stay on the surface, dive deeper and deeper and you will come to know that at the core of you and at the heart of human life is truth and beauty. This is great to do at the start of the day, as then I can go into my day with this awareness and this can change the quality of my whole day and my interactions with others.
