The Angel

The day I lowered my barriers and opened my heart was the day I recognized the angel. When he passed it was as if the plants, animals and people stopped breathing for a second in wonder. Nature bowed to him in reverence and even the air seemed to smile. The look of wanting in people’s eyes went- it was as if everyone’s needs were immediately fulfilled.

His features were serene, as if a question mark or anything slightly crooked had never crossed his mind. There was an easiness and a child-like innocence and yet such wisdom- wisdom without heaviness. There was no desire or attempt to prove to me who he was. I just felt a very deep respect, a very deep sense of brotherhood and of love. A love without neediness, confusion or desire- a pure love.

His eyes were like a transparent lake- I could see through them to the beauty of the being behind them. Yet too, they were a mirror in which I could see myself- despite his being so full of light and might he did not pull me towards his light he showed me how light I could become. In the mirror of his soul I could see the beauty of my soul reflected. More too- in the clear waters of his eyes it was as if I could see God reflected there like a sun.

The angel had one hand extended in my direction- it was a hand of giving and of letting go. It was a hand full of treasures. The other hand? Well, the other hand was in the hand of God. It was as if the angel was a channel, receiving from God with one hand and giving that away with the other. Full, always full. Free, always free.

This angel had wings too, not visible wings, they were wings that made me fly. Angels have the wonder of making you feel like them- seeing every soul as an angel they elevate you to their plane. I was well. I was okay, truly okay. This feeling of well-being I reflected later came from the deep acceptance and the deep love I felt from him- a love only felt when every soul, no matter what they have done or what they have become, is seen as a child of God.

The angel’s words were few. His words touched a part of me I had barely touched before. His words warmed my heart like hot chocolate on a snowy day. The angel told me that if I only open my heart I may one day find that, not only would I be able to recognise an angel, I would be able to grow into becoming one.

After him no marks or footsteps were left- only the fragrance of fresh flowers.
