Taming Tension

Tension arises when we are not in charge of our inner energies. So, take a minute… this is a tool to tame tension. Just stop and assess your thoughts and elevate them.

What creates tension, this pressure that destroys our joy of living? Separation from our true self, having to deal repetitively with too many things, our own and other’s expectations of us, being preoccupied with many things simultaneously, etc…? If you think about it whatever it is that causes you tension you will probably find that the underlying cause of that is some form of fear.

All tensions (fears) can usually be resolved/dissolved when we come to a certain understanding of ‘who am I’ and experience this true self more and more frequently. This true self can be said to be the being part of us human beings. The human part refers to the body and the roles we play, such as, mother, brother, scientist or manager. The being part refers to the one playing all these parts through the body. If your car is a ‘Golf’, would you introduce yourself as a Golf or as the driver of the Golf? So it is with the body, but we do introduce ourselves as the body, i.e, I am Julie’s brother and not the being (driver) of the body.

This being part is our eternal spiritual identity. This unlimited spiritual self has its own spiritual heritage and it is when we experience these qualities more and more frequently that we tame tension. Our spiritual heritage is faith, peace, love, patience, trust…and we must have experienced these things once otherwise how could these words even exist and have meaning for us now? We can begin to bring these experiences back into our lives by using our own thoughts, for example see below, and by building as many of these minutes into our day as we can, for instance maybe once an hour.

I sit here appreciating doing nothing. I look at the stream of my mind. Is it murky, loving, clean, clear, confused, rushing, etc.? Are you in the stream or standing on its banks? If you are in it you don’t have to be, just move to the bank for a moment and stand on the bank besides the stream. I am separate from the stream of my mind. Whatever the state of my mind just now – rich or poor – I am separate from it. I am standing dry and safe beside the stream somewhere under blue skies and amidst green fields. Whatever that stream is like, I am good and I see and appreciate the beauty around me.

To re-claim our spiritual heritage we just need to step out of the stream of our mind. Fear (tension) has arisen from loosing our spiritual heritage so re-claim your heritage and wave goodbye to fear and tension. It only takes a minute to step back, just now and then.
