Task or People orientated?
In extremes:
-task orientated management leaves people feeling as if they are no more than tools to get the job done; that they don’t count.
-people orientated management creates a holiday club; we don’t do anything.
Total Quality Management = 100% of both!
There is a good atmosphere (one of respect, trust and care) and people are motivated to achieve their best. Then there is co-operation and success.
To be motivated your heart, as well as your hands and brain, need to be engaged. We feel this when we feel we are respected and cared for in our job.
Co-operation
When managing people it is very important to be a giver and not a taker and the building block is love- when there is love there is natural trust, respect and caring.
Trust: First we must trust others- trust in their opinion i.e. take it on board. When there is no trust things don’t feel OK and then others don’t feel so sure about going along with you.
Respect: First we need to have self-respect- someone with self-respect doesn’t need to prove anything and naturally gives respect to others. When we don’t have self-respect we want others to give us ‘respect’- we become beggars. When there is self-respect I know my own value, I feel full and content and I recognize your equal value.
We are valuable not because of what we do but because we are. Value lies within the self. Every human being has intrinsic value, even at those times when their behaviour is not so good. Can you see a person doing something wrong and still see their value? At such times it is for me to be an example by living my own values and principles rather than trying to change them or impose on them.
Caring: TQM means to accept that mistakes will happen and to learn from them and find a solution. Traditional management locks in on one person and tries to make them feel guilty- it is your fault. Doing this means that that person doesn’t learn anything and next time mistakes are made they and others will want to hide them- the problems remain unsolved.
Where I work the manager of the department is responsible for any mistakes that happen. A mistake is one of the group- it is accepted that we are not perfect and that we need to solve things together. A mistake is an opportunity for improvement.
When someone is being negative or behaving negatively towards me, the question arises: how do i act or respond to their behaviour?
For me, the most important thing is to not to let them influence me. If I take it inside the illness will spread to me and to others I influence. When we suffer with others we don’t actually help them. My enthusiasm and my love of life can help them though.
Should I be sensitive towards them?
Well, this isn’t actually such a good stance as when I am sensitive I end up absorbing all that negativity.
Wear some beautiful armour?
okay, so now I don’t let things in, however, I also don’t let things out- I find I become cold.
An answer?
Give- ah yes, as when I am giving I am protected whilst remaining warm. I still need to be realistic though. Sometimes it may just be that it is better to just get out; if the situation is very negative and I know I will be influenced then the best thing to do is to to put some distance between me and it.
