Meditation: Questions & Answers

Question: What leads you to meditation?
Answer: Curiosity about what was going on in my own inner world.
Question: How did you start to meditate?
Answer: I was simply asked to turn inwards and to start looking at what was going on in my inner world. At first one sees a jumble of thoughts going in all directions and finds a difficulty to focus them or to concentrate on one. Then as you watch them they slow down, then you find that you can be selective about them and also create new ones that are in-line with my inner values.

Question: Inner values?
Answer: All values are within me, I find everything within. The first value or quality is that of peace. First I let my mind settle down then when I go inwards I can feel the peace that is there within… this may not be instant! Usually we meet that turbulent outer layer first, the things that you are anxious and worried about. If so, talk to yourself, tell your thoughts: it’s OK, I will come back and talk to you later, for now I want to go deeper within. It is like a lake turbulent on the top and as go deeper and deeper you find that stillness… your own natural peace. Other qualities are love, happiness, wisdom, contentment, patience, etc.

Question: Peace in the world?
Answer: Thoughts create vibrations and these have an effect on the world around me. If I create ones of peace versus anger it is like putting water versus fire on fire. Peace can take away aggression and can work on day to day life situations to bring calm to situations.

UNESCO research has found that the natural state of the human being is that of peace not aggression. Ask yourself: do you feel more comfortable in an atmosphere of peace or aggression? If I don’t give my body air, water, food what would happen? Do we give ourselves the opportunity to be silent and quiet and sustain ourselves with peace? There is a lot of sorrow in the world, but if I can stay peaceful I can help.

Question: Is there a best time of day to meditate?
Answer: There isn’t a set time as it is about learning to be able to keep a constant awareness. Saying that, early in the morning before your day begins is a wonderful way to create the right consciousness for the day. Then throughout the day to take that minute whenever the opportunity arises. Take these times to know your inner qualities, then you aren’t going to spend the day chasing around looking for them rather you are in a position to share them. Then also last thing before bed is good too so as to make peace with your day and sleep well. Lastly give mediating with open eyes a go, as then I can practise everywhere and anywhere.

It is about changing the patterns of my thoughts to create a higher awareness.

Peace comes from truth. Ask yourself what is truth? There is so much confusion in the world today. We need to re-find the truth within and to become free from negative and hurtful thinking. When you make effort for ‘righteousness‘ you will find peace. When there is peace love emerges. Then there is happiness and the power to never become peaceless again. This is the journey of meditation.

Sometimes in meditation things bubble up… for these times we need to develop faith. Firstly faith in myself. I have a mind, intellect and a heart. I just need to get through the traffic of all these thoughts. Next is faith in a Higher Source, that consistent and unchanging energy with all the qualities we are seeking for in abundance. Thirdly is faith in life. Life is about change, we can’t expect it not to change but we can have faith that spring always comes after winter and that there is benefit in everything.

Here is a commentary on creating a peaceful world which was spoken at the end of a talk:
I sit quietly… and I see my mind generating many thoughts… without judgement… Now I create within me a thought of peace… I reflect on this thought of peace… as I do I notice how my mind becomes calm and feels nourished… I let my mind enjoy this peace… I let this feeling of peace stay with me… I begin to feel peaceful… I realise that this peace belongs to me… This peace goes into the depth of my being…so that my heart feels peaceful… and being at peace my heart can now feel love… I feel secure and warm… and feelings of love emerge…This love reaches out and travels to those around me… and fills the atmosphere… I hold this peace and love in my awareness … and I surround the world with this peace and love… then coming back into the awareness of where I am sitting… and of this moment… keeping the awareness of this peace and love with me… I take it with me… as I continue on with my day.
