Greed – an old fashioned word but it still affects us all. We all have greed for something. Yes, even you! A bigger house, a better career…? Are you aware of what you want?
How do you deal with greed? By getting what you want? I thought as much! And then what? More clothes, more shoes, more financial stability, more attention, more love…. “What I have at present is not good enough and needs replacing.” “I really fancy that latest iPod, the newest mobile phone …. ”
Our appetite just seems to grow – like seawater the more we drink, the thirstier we become. Gandhi said: “There is enough for everybody’s need, but not enough for anybody’s greed.”
Wanting more, having more, getting more… How do you feel when you get it all? Are you satisfied? For how long? With greed, frustration and unhappiness are unavoidable. Michelangelo claimed that his David, Pieta and other great sculptures were already present in the raw marble blocks. In the same way, you already have everything that you need. So, to be happy, be satisfied with all that you have and enjoy discovering all the potential you have deep within, like Michelangelo did.
Also start recognising how greed works for you and learn to curb and contain it. Keep count of:
– the “I want…” thoughts
– how many times you give in to greed
– the number of times you look away from greed and carry on
The best way to curb greed is to go in the opposite direction, go towards “generosity.” Give generously. Start with where you are. Start by giving what you have. So, start today – explore the new generous you!
