Consciousness: A Basic Model

Draw 3 lines in the air…

The top layer [elevated consciousness]. Here we are in a state of natural spirituality i.e. of love, peace and wisdom. It is characterized by unconditional love. One feels ‘above’ all of the negativity that was hurting one (in ones’ mind and in ones’ life), and how love flows out from us offering and giving support to others unconditionally. The moments we are here may last for less than a minute, yet these are moments we treasure forever.

The middle layer [ordinary consciousness]. This layer is characterized by a sense of uncertainty. We worry about this-that: what others will think of us; what ‘X’ said/ did; thinking: how to pay the bills; what will happen tomorrow –this is too good to last and also find ourselves saying I didn’t meant to say that…. This is where most of us spend most of our time.

The lower layer. This layer is characterized by ‘reactivity; a button is pushed and we react. Jealousy; resentment; anger; bitterness etc are all feelings associated with this layer. We visit here now and then, only we do not like it here as it is like being imprisoned in a dungeon. We do all sorts of things to escape from here; no-one stays here all the time- it actually would require a big effort to stay in one of these kinds of states all the time.

To be a master of my consciousness -to empower my consciousness- is to bring it to stillness.

Power in the ‘outside’ world is the ability to influence future change. The power of consciousness is the ability to bring an end to all change. In an average day ‘we’ change so many times. We go through so many emotional ups and downs. This is all very tiring and confusing; tiredness and confusion drain away our power and are a sign that we are not the master of the energy of our consciousness. To become the master of our consciousness is to be able to stop all change in our consciousness; to bring our consciousness to stillness. When we are still and silent from the depths of our consciousness comes insight. Thus insight can then inform our thinking and actions.

The way we experience our own individual reality is a reflection of our consciousness. What we ‘see’ and understand is related to our consciousness. In fact, as our consciousness is so is our experience of the world live in, such as, when our consciousness is peace-less so the world we live in is peace-less.

It is true to say that what we ‘see’ tells us more about ourselves than what is really going on out there.

We are very much focused ‘out there’ and so have looked to changing our world for the better by changing ‘out there.’ However, as ‘out there’ depends on our own consciousnesses the successes we achieve don’t last – something always happens. The secret to change ‘out there’ is that first we need to change our consciousness and then we can truly change our world for the better.
