To Think or Not To Think?

When we are silent… we are. It isn’t that there are no thoughts. First there is silence and then there is thought; the quality, nature, speed, accuracy and impact of these thoughts are very different to those of a non-silent mind. It isn’t ‘not to think’ but what to think and how to think in such a way that we can heal and benefit ourselves and the world.

Look at ‘time’ – there is such a great need for the actions we perform to be ones that bring benefit to others… be it through our words, the way we see things, our presence… The only thought that I have is ‘What do I have to do now?’ and I stay in the understanding that others are always doing their best, this lets me have patience and allows them to be as they are. Whatever our gender, age, nationality or religion the blood of every human being is the same. Is the colour of your blood different from mine? Are the tears you shed different from the ones others shed?

The ‘scale of thoughts’
Are you aware of your thoughts and the effect they have on your feelings and energy? Everything begins in the mind. We need to begin with understanding the ‘scale of thoughts’ and their connection with our energy levels. At one level are negative (of dislike) thoughts and at the other side are positive (pure) thoughts and then there are all the ones in-between: the wasteful, weak and ordinary ones. Mostly our thoughts are somewhere in-between, and we have become comfortable here. These thoughts though along with negative ones deplete our energy. Depleted we don’t have the power to feel happy inside or the power to give others happiness. Instead in order to experience some happiness we do things like; going to the cinema; theatre; restaurant; rugby; beach… etc. Wouldn’t it be great to feel happy first and then do rather than to do in order to experience temporary happiness?

Becoming peaceful
Thinking too much to no end? Here we are in the present; what am I thinking about? The past? The future? Other people? ‘It shouldn’t have happened’ ‘Why did it happen?’ Many thoughts also arise out of our attachments and in relation to our ego (our image of ourselves and maintaining it). What do these types of thoughts solve or resolve? These are all wasteful thinking and just deplete our energy.

Instead, choose to take time out to become peaceful and to share that peace with the world. To do this is like giving your mind an experience of ‘fresh air’. We tend to make simple things complex; all you need do though is just sit quietly, without worry, take your attention from external things and go deep within. When we stabilize and concentrate our intellects inside then we experience peace, this experience of peace connects us with God. This is all we need to do, then give peace to the world and share peace though your words, vision and presence.

God belongs equally to us all and is concerned for everyone, when we are peaceful we can connect with Him. Then it isn’t difficult to remain peaceful and when we share this peace, from our heart, with others their difficulties go too. When it is very hot and it rains we enjoy the rain and how fresh and still everything becomes afterwards. God says be like a cloud and shower peace, let it be as if there is a flood of peace.

Healing the heart
A peaceless mind means our heart has sorrow. The intellect says to the mind sit quietly and let me chat to the heart. The heart says to the intellect look after the mind, it is peaceless and complaining. Often our heart is holding onto some pain, we need to sit and talk to our heart so that we can let the pain go. If we don’t we become depressed. Let us use our thoughts to heal our hearts and bring them into happiness, then when there is happiness in our hearts love, mercy and truth flow out from our hearts and we can bring benefit to others and the world. If I can explain and bring comfort to your heart then your mind will become peaceful.

It is common to worry and be dependent… be uncommon; become patient and carefree, then you can establish love.
