“Kindness is our nature… We are genetically wired to be kind. This is why it is good for us. And it is also why, when we don’t show kindness, or compassion, gratitude or forgiveness, it stresses our nervous system and isn’t good for our health.” David Hamilton
It’s cool to be kind. When someone is genuinely kind towards you how do you feel? Recall a time when, out of the blue, a stranger acted kindly towards you? Then, how about a time when you spontaneously did something for someone else? It doesn’t have to be big things. Small acts of kindness can have as much impact as big ones. In both cases, how did you feel? Did you feel more upbeat and optimistic?
What is kindness?
Kindness is about valuing and caring for ourselves and others. Real kindness is selfless. Research has shown that kindness has a positive impact on us both physically and mentally. It improves both the health of our bodies and our levels of happiness.
Are you kind to yourself? Do you talk to yourself with understanding and compassion? Do you treat yourself like you would a good friend? Take time to care and value yourself and you’ll be able to drown out the critical voice.
Hidden kindnesses
Kindness also relates to the vision we have of ourselves and others. Seeing the best in, having good wishes for and believing in ourselves and others are also acts of kindness.
On a final note, kindness can have quite a ripple effect. One small act of kindness by you today can inspire that person to pass it on to the next and the next and the next.
