Stuck in a rut? Don’t know what you want? Don’t know what to do? Don’t know how to get started? Afraid of doing the wrong thing? Just can’t move past the obstacle before you? Feeling trapped – no time, no money…?
Getting Unstuck
When we feel stuck we tend to feel frustrated with our self. So, first things first, stop beating yourself up and be kind to yourself. Accept that you feel stuck. To resist feeling stuck is just going to keep us stuck.
Next, clarify what you want – what you really want, not what you think you should want. Put it into words, paint a picture, make a collage, visualize it.
If there are different areas of your life that you feel stuck in, just take one to begin with. You will probably find that unsticking one area of your life automatically helps with unsticking other areas too.
Focus your attention on what you want. Think about it every day, the benefits not the difficulties. Even, commit publically.
Start making a move. If there are several options, check which one is the one most likely to take you closest to what you want? Now break it down into small and manageable steps. Instead of saying, I am going to get up an hour earlier, for example, make it this week I will get up 5 minutes earlier and then increase it week by week. If you are not sure what the first step is, then, there is your first step, to find out what you need to know to make that first step.
Be aware of the influence the company has on you. Surround yourself by other motivated people and ones that lift your spirit… in books and on-line as well as in person. Be inspired by others’ success.
Also, check out your self-talk. Does it support you or undermine you? Are you telling yourself that you can’t do it OR why bother OR that there is no way? Everything begins with our thoughts, start saying, “I CAN”.
Be prepared for your motivation to ebb and flow and when it ebbs don’t throw it in. Have a plan for what to do in a lull. Maybe go and talk to a motivating friend; remind yourself of the benefits of being unstuck; read something inspirational or just doing something different. Sometimes there may be some extra stickiness that requires a bit of investigation. It could be an old habit that is holding us back, for example. Do some investigation, and in doing so, you will likely find a hidden treasure that you thought you had lost forever. Just remember, all roads have dips and hills – don’t give up.
