How do you know when your ego is at work? “I am better than…” “I am not as good as…” Both these two expressions of ego are as bad as each other!
Ever caught yourself thinking, “Without me they wouldn’t have got as far as they did”. Well, that’s not you but your ego talking. Ego makes us arrogant, self-centered, stubborn and insecure.
Ego hides the weaknesses and then claims to the outside world that we have none. A lot of the time, ego enables us to see weaknesses in others but not our own. Ego is concerned only with how other peoples’ actions will affect us, and not how our actions might affect others.
So, shift ego! How? It’s not hard, trust me.
The next time you’re staring at ego follow this route, to make your journey smoother:
• With success – keep going straight and take the next right onto “Share the Praise”. Enjoy success without the need to boast or gloat over your achievements. Appreciate the contributions of others and understand how you fit into the ‘picture’ of making the task successful.
• With your skills – when you know you’re very good at something and start feeling overconfident or even slightly cocky, do a U-Turn. Recognise your talents but value yourself as a being (rather than just your skills) and continue back onto the main road of “self respect”.
• When “offering suggestions” – when you hear yourself telling people what to do, make sure to take a turn, gently express your opinions without forcing them on others.
• With others – feeling ‘not good enough’ because you compare yourself to others means you are stuck on the “road to nowhere”. Stop at the crossroads and get comfortable in your own skin. Let your self-worth increase and then continue straight on to appreciating others. Everyone’s valuable but no one’s better than the other. Be who you are and let others be who they are.
And then continue straight ahead and in 0.5 miles you will have reached your destination – humility! Humility is uncompromised strength, because to have it you have to want nothing. When you have humility you get everything.
